I took the second-to-last ferry of the day and risked being stranded on the far side of the Hudson in the perilous wastelands of New Jersey to bring back these photos of the SailGP Tech Site at Liberty Landings Marina.
The guard wasn’t letting members of the public in, but the site was only surrounded by chain link fencing with no banners or scrims, so I could see a lot just by walking along the fence.
Look closely and you can see the US F-50 inside the hangar!
Some kind of meeting was going on. From the uniform colors, it looks like people from several different teams, but I couldn’t make out anyone’s face at that distance.
But because I was on the last ferry back to Manhattan, I ended up riding with a lot of people from the tech team!
Their bags had little “Remove Before Flight” tags except they said “SailGP” and “Race For The Future” instead.
Rivi was an intern with Team Canada who I ended up sitting next to and talking to a lot. She said they’d been putting the Canadian F-50 together all day, and that it felt like assembling a giant IKEA table. She also had a cool Vendée Globe shirt!
Fortunately we docked at Brookfield Place on time, having safely escaped New Jersey for the time being.

Some time ago, I encountered a family of Canada Geese. Mom and Dad goose were on one side of a chain-link fence, looking very concerned. The little goslings were on the other side. Oh no! What if something came to attack the babies while they were separated from their parents? Eventually I walked over to try to help the family unite. The parents hissed at me. Instead of going through a lifted-up piece of broken fence…the babies just ran right through the chain-link gaps as I approach! I walked away then, not wanting to interfere further. Silly birds!
Awww!! I'm glad the babies were able to reunite with their parents! Canadian geese scare me, you're braver than me!! 😱 Their babies are adorable, though!!
#Bird#there's a family of baby geese that live near my office! i haven't seen them in a while#but they come every spring to raise babies!

It has been estimated that each year up to 2 per cent of the swift parrot breeding population – which is down to a mere 2000 or so birds – is killed as a result of collisions with windows, fences (especially chain-link fences) and vehicles. [this is in Aus]
up to 1 billion birds die each year from collisions with windows in Australia alone.
Most research into building-related bird deaths has been done in the United States and Canada, where cities such as Toronto and New York City are located on bird migration paths. In New York City alone, the death toll from flying into buildings is about 200,000 birds a year.
In the UK, the British Trust for Ornithology estimated a few years ago that 100 million bird strikes occurred each year, of which a third are fatal.
up to one billion birds in the us alone die of window collisions annually. if you support bird conservation, campaigning against wind farms should not be your first action.

Commentary on architectural blunders in monthly serial.
James Howard Kunstler
Nov 20, 2024
You may know that my old website was attacked and destroyed in September, 2024, and we have been working to rebuild it here on Substack since then. The monthly installment of the Eyesore of the Month was unfortunately interrupted . . . but we are back now. This feature started many years ago as a way to display the gross design blunders of architecture and urban design in our built environment — the everyday human habitat we call home. It grew out of the books I wrote about these subjects beginning with The Geography of Nowhere in 1993, and continuing through Home From Nowhere, and The City in Mind: Notes on the Urban Condition. — JHK
November 2024
Behold, the new Rose des Vents student apartments at the Technopôle Angus, Montreal, Canada! Zut alors ! ! ! Our neighbor to the north, laboring harshly under the regime of Justin Trudeau, has developed an extreme penchant for self-punishment. Hence, its student housing draws inspiration from the great 1954 movie by director Don Siegel, Riot in Cell Block 11. Yes, Looks exactly like the municipal lockup in a small-to-medium city. The two top floors just scream “Exercise Yard” with all that chain-link fencing. The ground floor has even less character than the building above, signifying nothing. Since that’s where the building meets the street, it will serve as a people-repellant. (People like to know what they’re walking into.) Designed by the Montreal architecture firm ADHOC. Now, imagine it in January of a Montreal winter: windswept, with giant piles of filthy snow all around.
Shout-out to Ray Sawhill for the nomination.

[Image ID: The first of six images in an illustrated comic.
A map of the United States of America with most of the states in the middle three-quarters of the USA as well as Hawaii and Alaska colored in green and bordered in sketched pink lines. These states are labeled with their postal abbreviations. The rest of the states are in a darker blue and unlabeled. Off to the lower-right of the states, a Canadian goose is speaking. It says "Did you know all these states have native names!?" (The word "these" is written in the same color as the states.)
/End ID]
[Image ID: The second of six images in an illustrated comic.
Connecticut, Minnesota, and Utah are drawn in a stylized manner with two Canadian geese flying between them. A sentence is written for each state, beginning with the name of the state in all-caps.
"Connecticut is from the Mohegan word 'Quinnehtukqut' meaning 'beside the tidal river'"
"Minnesota is a Dakota word for 'sky-tinted water'"
"Utah is derived from the name of one of its tribes: the Ute people"
/End ID]
[Image ID: The third of six images in an illustrated comic.
The Canadian goose is on a hill with a couple pieces of litter, next to a pond with a floating plastic bottle. Out in the background is a pink sunset.
The goose says, "Interesting right? Us Americans haven't had the best education regarding this land's indigenous history nor its present! But it's never too late to educate yourself and those around you."
/End ID]
[Image ID: The fourth of six images in an illustrated comic.
The goose appears twice in front of a background with wavy blue lines and a shining yellow circle for the sun.
First, the goose says, "What? You thought I couldn't be American because I'm a Canada goose?"
In the second part, the words continue, "Canada, USA … pff. My people are older than these names. I was born in California, but I live in Ontario during the warm months. I heard some of your kind used to live freely like that too."
/End ID]
[Image ID: the fifth of six images in an illustrated comic.
The goose stands with a wing under its chin as though thinking, in front of a collage of photos including: an image of a group of Native people behind a chain-linked fence, and an image of one in ceremonial clothing holding water by a gathering of police during some kind of protest or demonstration in a dusty area. (As an aside comment, I think these are rather famous pictures, but I'm not well-versed enough in history to know where or why these pictures were taken.)
The goose says, "Huh… It's almost as if borders are just imaginary lines drawn by those in power for political gain instead of reflecting and respecting the history of the land itself and those that have always lived there!!"
/End ID]
[Image ID: the last of six images in an illustrated comic.
The goose flies off into a flock with other Canadian geese. The background is a grassy beach with the sun setting or rising.
The goose says, "Anyway, we're off to Toronto. Sure hope you guys sort this mess out soon! The fate of the planet kinda depends on it!"
Another paragraph is at the bottom of the image along with Tumblr handle and name of the author of the comic.
"Acknowledgement is the first step. Find out whose land you're on at native-land.ca and learn about the path to a more just future at landback.org or via #landback"
mariah-rose marie / @ biophonies
/End ID]
I'm sure I didn't ID the fifth image's collage correctly. Apologies for any mistakes; I tried to find the events for each of these but couldn't.
After that is another ID for a reblog.
[Image ID: two replies by Tumblr user skydalorian.
"Also I'm Native and don't appreciate that this seems to lump in the general public as some collective stupid and unwashed mass that needs to be shown the blessing of (flawed) education here. Yes this message needs to be said, but there's better ways of going about it that doesnt also muffle existing voices nor condescend. Like, why is a fucking message about the importance of Native claims to land also preaching about how claims to land don't matter idk idk"
"'It's never too late to educate yourself!! uwu' isn't quite as strong a message when you get some of the abbreviations for the indigenous states wrong."
"This is a solid message but was poorly executed and has a weird tone tbh for something that clearly shows its own error."
/End ID]
If anyone would rather reblog just the comic with ID, feel free to copy my transcription. I wasn't planning on doing two separate reblogs, mainly since it's a good message with poor execution (as said in the reply). It's far, far better than what I could do myself, but it isn't as good as it probably needed to be for the amount of traction it got.

MM Rasey - "Just say it!" - Topic: Canada
| My muse struggles with the truth...Send "Just say it!" And my muse will confess to something they don't really talk about. Bonus: specify a specific topic and that's what they will talk about!
Raphael tried to keep his gaze lowered from the posters that were all over the walls of the school. There was always something posted up on the walls of the school hallways. Announcements, the school bell schedule. If something more eventful was going on, like posters to tell about spirit week dress up announcements. Sometimes random junk done in other classes like art work from the drawing, and painting classes. Sometimes they hung up stuff from the wood and metal shop classes too. Just lots and lots of posters as well like if the wrestling team was going to the championship. Or a dance was coming up and they were looking for students to join the committee for it.
And then there were the ones that Raphael was trying his best to avoid at all cost. It was nearing graduation time. The current senior class would be leaving high school and how did the principal phase it? Starting the steps to the next phase of their life or whatever? He felt a bit lost in the shuffle among the other students who were also leaving the gym once the the school assembly had let out. Raph had left on his own. Not with Casey or even one of his brothers hell not even any of his team mates. Mentally he knew what class he had next so he was just heading for the science hall. Normally it was one of his most skipped classes. He just ask Donnie for help on his assignments for it anyway. Not so much to do his science work for him anymore since Splinter banned Don from doing that altogether and not just for the other kids in the school.
Just as he was trying to recall if this was one of his few classes with an assigned seating though he stopped by the band hall, it was one of the best places to sneak out from. As the name of the hall stated the only real class room down it was where the band kids went for practice and such. Meaning it went kind of under the raider on areas to watch over. Which was real dumb on the schools part. It had become Raph and Casey's usual exit when they wanted to ditch a class or two. So they could instead sneak off to the near by park or what the others who used it as a place to smoke dub it, 'the pit'. Which they normally did about this time, Raphael had thought about lying and telling Casey to go off on his own this time.
Say he had to go to class, blame it on Splinter. Casey would buy that his mom and Splinter could be pretty similar after all and telling them Splinter been on his ass about actually going to class? Well wouldn't be too far of a stretch. And maybe he could just let the science talk drown out everything else in his mind instead? Or? He could do the second option as he started off still making use of the mass of students to hide as best as a bulky teen could well a bulky mutant turtle teen could more like. Making it out the door and walking the usual way to get towards the pit. Was it a smart idea? not really Casey likely saw him anyway or would head here himself. Raph just wanted a few more minutes alone was all. Just thinking back to everything the principal was going on and on about. Till he finally reached the park and slug off his back pack.
Leaning over the top of the half chain link fence that sectioned off the park, He closed his eyes for a moment he just needed a moment of quite just five seconds that was all. Man he wished there was someone to fight, fighting those guys in the auto shop felt so good. Of course, he can't have even just two seconds of peace before hearing Casey's voice. Asking why he didn't wait and such.
Raphael being in a bad mood isn't new, he kind of goes into one over just about anything even if hes far more energetic over all. So the grump act doesn't seem to really work on his boyfriend like it dose his brothers. When he gets all closed off they just ignore him and leave him be. Not Casey. Never Casey. Which could be annoying like now. "Not like we do everything together." He finally answered which was kind of lie, they were pretty much always together after all. Soon as they first found the other at school, they even hooked up on the weekends. Only time they weren't? "Not like we'll always be either." He mumbles out. Which course was bound to get Casey's attention more then the first statement did. "Just forget it alright." Raphael tries to insist but Casey didn't drop it.
Neither of them were like that, when something was clearly up they stuck their noses into the others business even more.
"Just say it!"
"I'm just think about shit from the assembly okay!" Raph snaps with, and yeah maybe it could seem likely. Maybe it made more sense, after all anxiety over ones future once you're made to think about it? Wasn't usually not even for a mutant. Who wasn't really sure what that might mean for him in general. And Raphael kind of wish that's what he was worrying over but it wasn't. He spent enough time before worrying about that before they kind of finally had more options then being shut away in a sewer till they finally died off one by one. That was depressing, but so was the current thought in his mind. "Like when it come time for us to graduate and shit like that, nothing wrong with that i'm allow to think okay! Like do I wanna see if I can become a wrestler with the WWE? Or join in on Rock and Beep's moving services for the rest of my life. Or I dunno how I know this thing between us basically ends the moment we throw the stupid caps up in to the air once they finally say the graduating class shit!"
Raphael hadn't really meant to let that last bit out, the part that's been eating away at him for a good while he just never thought about it but the assembly and everything the principal was saying? It just seemed to hammer this, fear. Right into him. "Do you know how much it sucks to love someone well in the back of your head there is a count down to it just ending one day?" Raph continues to yell, it was always his issue he always went in loud. "But I know how much you love Canada and if anything I understand it even more now. Why you can't let go of it." He just didn't word it but it was obvious because that was where Casey's Dad died. "You say it yourself you want to move back once you can." His voice slowly started to lose the volume. "And I want you too! You always look so much happier when we got to that Canadian restaurant you love, or when you showed me your photos from winter vacation when you went. Doesn't mean it doesn't suck alright."

Moments That Bring Me Joy: Air Bud
Because Disney+ finally put up Air Bud, I decided I'd do one of these for one of my favorite childhood movies. I have no idea why this movie in particular grabbed my heart and never let go, amongst all the other dog movies I watched. I mean, come on - this is a movie about basketball, for crying out loud! Why would I, who have never had even a smidge of interest in any sport whatsoever, fall in love with a movie about a basketball-playing pooch?
But I did. I loved it almost from the first glimpse of that beautiful golden retriever face (possibly partly because my aunt and uncle had a golden retriever at the time who was the sweetest dog ever). I cried like a baby the first time I watched it (we had to pause for lunch right after Snively takes Buddy, and I could barely eat). I identified with Josh surprisingly strongly, considering I was a girl who had never had a dog or played basketball or lost my dad or anything this kid goes through. But empathized with him really strongly, and for the next year or so, I got through boring schoolwork by daydreaming highly dramatic scenarios involving me training on various sports teams with my imaginary dog Peter. (Peter was a collie, not a golden retriever, but I can definitely point to Air Bud as being the spark of inspiration for him.) Or I think sometimes I would be training Peter for a dog show or something, and he would successfully jump through a hoop or do a trick each time I answered another question in my workbook XD
But anyway, enough about that! Here are the moments in the movie that still give me joy, all these years later (and remember, joy doesn't necessarily mean happiness):
THE OLD DISNEY LOGO! Oh gosh, the nostalgia! *_* I think I got this movie for my seventh birthday or something. That was such a long time ago....
"Fernfield, Where Everything Is Possible." What a town motto XD
"Hey, kids, it's Happy Slappy Time!"
All of the unimpressed expressions on the audience during the disastrous clown antics XD The extras in this movie are just. The Best.
All the cows watching Buddy through the fence after he falls off the truck. Simple humor, but effective. Love it.
Oh gosh, who does the music in this thing?! ...Brahm Wenger. Never heard of him, but the soundtrack in this movie is incredible. Way better than it needed to be, but we're hardly 8 minutes into the movie and I'm already noticing it. Mr. Wenger, you were wasted on all those Air Buddies movies.
When Josh is walking past the kids playing basketball, running his fingers along the chain-link fence. I can't quite put it into words, and I certainly couldn't then, but I remember sitting in the living room at seven years old, seeing that for the first time and thinking, "That's me." The best I can explain it is it's something about being on the outside looking in.
Just realized the first word we hear Josh say is "sucks" XD
When Josh breaks down the rotten fence and the music swells as we get that gorgeous view of the lake(?)
There's nothing like seeing a sad little boy and a sad little dog bonding and having fun for the first time in forever <3
*right after Buddy has utterly destroyed the living room* Josh: "So...can I keep him?" Mom: 😒
Josh's mom letting him keep Buddy as a Christmas present :')
"Sigmund twins moved to Canada, God knows why." - I don't remember this line at all, but it makes me laugh now XD
That doggy smile Buddy gives Josh the first time he makes a basket ^_^
That "well, crap" look on the coach's face when he realizes he has to put Josh on the team after embarrassing him in front of everybody, because Josh is that good of a player
I just really like the fat referee. He's having the worst night of his life, and I want to give him a hug and tell him it'll be okay XD
I take a vicious sort of joy in the rightness of the first coach getting caught red-handed in the abusive way he punishes Tom for fumbling the ball, and Coach Chaney taking over instead.
Man, the music in this movie! It turns a simple scene of the new middle school mascot doing a trick into a heroic moment of sheer triumph, followed by that montage of them winning games that just makes you want to get up and cheer.
Josh's mom coming out the morning after Snively takes Buddy away, and finding a newspaper on her driveway for the first time...I like the subtle touch.
"I don't want my dog to do beer commercials. I got ethics!" *30 seconds later* "Out of curiosity, how much are we talking for one of those beer commercials?"
Snively's unbelievably terrible truck - and driving XD Plus his pathetic little "No, I needed that!" when the steering wheel falls off :P
The whole scene where Josh lets Buddy go. Yes, that scene brings me joy - and I'm tearing up, even though I can't even count how many times I've seen this movie and know perfectly well that everything will turn out fine very shortly! It's just so perfectly done, showing their bond and providing an opportunity for Josh to explain what he's doing even though there's no one with him except for a dog. And that music, I just...it's in my soul. It's the heart's cry of the little girl I used to be, lonely and wishing I could have a dog that wasn't just in my imagination, because that was the only kind of friend I could imagine having. And that bit where the music is swelling and Buddy is racing after Josh through the brambles and dead bushes...I can point to that moment as the beginning of the many, many daydreams I would have about my imaginary dog Peter as I'd gaze out the window of a moving vehicle.
"Ain't no rule says a dog can't play basketball!"
"Hey, Water Boy...nice shot." - I FORGOT ABOUT THAT!!!! I LOVE THIS!!!! Even Larry has to finally acknowledge Josh is a good player!
The whole trial is so silly, but somehow...lovably so? I'm not sure if that would be the case to someone who's actually a lawyer, though ^^' But it's just so full of fun moments:
"What is that dog doing in the courthouse?" "That's the, uh...child, sir." "That's a pretty ugly kid."
"I will not have my courtroom turned into a circus." *literal clown walks in*
"I'm the plaintiff." "You look like an idiot."
"Who are you, Barnum or Bailey?" "Arthur Chaney, Your Honor."
"Mr. Chaney, during my forty years on the bench, I have heard a lot of lame-brained, cockamamie proposals. But this one...I like."
"Case closed! Thank God."
Oh, interesting! I never noticed before, but in the credits, right under the note about "no animals were harmed," there's a note that says, "No special visual effects were used in the basketball sequences of this Motion Picture."
And again, that soundtrack! I can guarantee you, if seven-year-old me had known soundtracks were a thing, I would have begged and pleaded to get my hands on the Air Bud soundtrack, and I would have worn it out completely as I daydreamed about my adventures with my imaginary dog. You know...I still might see if I can get it, because the music alone brings me so much joy ^_^
#moments that bring me joy#air bud#tales of baby novie#incidentally i also had an imaginary horse and an imaginary cat but they didn't feature as prominently#and peter was the only one who followed me everywhere

Wednesday, August 23 - Quebec City
We had a perfect weather day in Quebec and tried to take advantage of every minute. We had a lot of places on the map that we hoped to get to, but we decided first to go to Montmorency Falls, a park about 12km from the port. We had researched the #800 bus, which goes from the train station to the falls (actually it goes further in the other direction, but the train station stop was the closest to the port). We spent a little time in the station, which is a delightful building (shown behind the fountain), and then looked for our bus stop. Because of construction that stop was closed and it took a little while to figure where the next stop was, but we made it. The bus runs every 10 minutes or so, and we got to the falls about a half hour later. We also found out that the park, which used to be free and open, is now enclosed with a chain link fence, and despite the bus stop being for the falls, it was now at least a kilometer to the new entrance, where they are charging about $8 Canadian for seniors. From the number of people there, they are making out quite well financially over free.
The falls themselves did not disappoint, however. The place was packed with people viewing the 83 meter high chute, but also zip lining in front of the falls, doing a via ferrata (not on the day we were there) and taking the cable car down to the level of the base of falls. Arriving where we did, we only had a short climb to the suspension bridge across the top and then descended down the walkway to the base, 487 steps in all. There were little covered platforms on the way down for photo stops, although it's hard to exclude the infrastructure from the pictures. They are in the process of adding more access at the bottom, as they have already built a nice viewing/sitting area out by the end of the cable car and railroad station, and have completed another lower walkway on the west side. To get back to the east side of the river without backtracking they are adding a "semi-submerged walkway" near the base of the falls. The bottom of the walkway will be below water level with solid sides projecting above the surface. This will all be in the zone of constant mist, not to mention that the river below the falls sometimes ices over. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts.
There are still only two ways back up to the top - take the very crowded, overpriced cable car, or walk back up the 487 steps. We did the latter, and were happy to reach the top. On this side of the falls on a promontory are the remains of a fort built in 1759, and this little robo mower is in charge of keeping it neat and tidy. One of the strange things about Quebec (the province) is all the monuments to the British, but written in French. Most of the battles here were against the French, who seem to have lost the territory but won the language and customs. Unlike in British Columbia, where every sign is in both English and French, representing both official languages (although French is rarely spoken out west), here most signage (and information boards) are only in French. That makes sense for the Quebecois, but not for the visitors from Ontario. C'est la vie.
We eventually left the park, caught the bus back, and started exploring Quebec City proper. First we had to get up to the upper level, and our approach was somewhat marred by lots of tourists to places such as McDonalds, and the effect of reducing all charm to its monetary value. We finally did find our way to the Le Chateau Frontenac, which dominates the skyline of the upper town. Built in seven stages from 1892 to 1993, it is now a Fairmont Hotel. From there we walked the promenade to another series of steps, this time only 310, to the top of the Citadel. A wall facing the harbor has been a key part of the city's defenses since early occupation, but the British completed the fort in 1820, still worried about the pesky Americans who had attacked Canada before in 1775 and 1812. It is still an active military installation and also the secondary residence for the Canadian monarch and the Governor General of Canada.
It was a little late to enter - it will have to wait until we return in four days - and we were getting just a little tired by this point. We found an easier way down than the steps and finally got down to the Old Town which is below the cliffs. We did a quick walk through a few streets and decided to also save the rest for our return, when we can linger. Our ship is docked until 11, but we wanted to get back for dinner and the evening program, and mostly just sit down.
We had planned an early evening, but it was "dance party" night out on the deck, and the band was wonderful, and so many people were having a good time that we stayed for closing and watched the lights of Quebec City fade into the distance as we sailed away. We are glad we are returning on our way back down the St Lawrence, since there is a lot left to explore.
Tomorrow we will be in the much smaller town of Trois Rivieres, so may not have to get up so early, since we are also staying there until 11. Our weather today was perfect, and tomorrow is supposed to be more of the same. We are so lucky.

The head of the Native Women’s Association of Canada says it’s clear there's an ongoing emergency. This is nearly four years after the final report into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls was released. Red dresses are set to be on display across the country Friday to recognize the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People. It has become known as Red Dress Day and the empty garments serve as a symbol of the lives that have been lost. Each year there are more events, rallies, and art displays. Despite increased awareness and an extensive national inquiry, McBride said Indigenous girls' and women's faces have not substantially changed. The inquiry’s final report was released in 2019 and included sweeping calls for change. It found Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or go missing than any other group in Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accepted the findings, which said the crisis amounted to genocide. Sixty-three percent of Indigenous women have experienced violence and nearly half have experienced sexual assault, Statistics Canada said in a report last year. At least 28 Indigenous women in Manitoba have died due to violence since May 2020, said Sandra DeLaronde, team lead for the Manitoba MMIWG2S+ implementation team. The majority were in Winnipeg. A group hung 101 red dresses along a chain-link fence outside a landfill in the Manitoba capital over the winter. Winnipeg police have said the bodies of four Indigenous women were disposed of in landfills last year. The remains have not been found. A man has been charged with first-degree murder in the killings of four women. Other Indigenous remains were also found in a landfill earlier this year. Police said her death was not a homicide. DeLaronde said it's time to recognize that Indigenous people are sacred, and they should not only be honored when they are buried. The House of Commons unanimously backed a motion Tuesday declaring deaths and disappearances a Canada-wide emergency. It also called for funding of a new system to alert the public when someone gets missing. The Association of Canadians criticized the federal government for not doing more or acting fast enough. McBride said Tuesday’s motion was a valuable step, but there is more to do. Most of the money announced to fulfill the 231 calls to justice became stuck in government bureaucracy, DeLaronde said. Women and families who need it are not receiving it. DeLaronde added that all Canadians should use Red Dress Day to reflect on what they can do to create change. "Red Dress is a movement that people can get behind because it's an opportunity to transform the very fabric of this country."
